What to expect from a Reiki Session

What happens during a Reiki Session?

During a session you can lie or sit comfortably. As the practitioner places their hands on or near your body, allowing the Reiki energy to flow through, you may begin to feel warm, tingly sensations. Your practitioner will play soft, soothing music, if you prefer silence let your practitioner know. You will grow more relaxed as the session progresses. Chakra balances usually last approximately 15 minutes and are typically done with the hands off method. Meaning the practitioner will only place her hands 1-3 inches above your body. If you decide to receive healing to a specific area such as back, knee, etc. these sessions usually last approximately 30 minutes. These can be done as a hands on or hands off method, depending on your preference and level of comfort. As always if at any time you feel any discomfort please let your practitioner know.

What does a Reiki Session feel like?

 What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all. In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some even drift off to sleep. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.

Who can receive a Reiki session?

Absolutely anyone or anything! Yes that includes, babies, pets, plants, situations and objects being it living or non-living. You don’t have to limit it to just being a healing treatment for your body. Because Reiki is the enhancement and rebalancing of energies, you can use it on all kinds of things. Having a Reiki session done on some of your favorite objects can create a more peaceful, soothing, and harmonious home environment and create a sense of peace and serenity when you’re around them. For example, if you were to have a Reiki Session done on your car, with its energies balanced, you will feel calm and relaxed the next time you’re in a traffic jam. This is because the Reiki energy will help to create a sanctuary-like environment inside the car, and you will benefit from it. You can have Reiki done on your furniture to make it more comfortable and cozy when you’re relaxiing at home. Any negative energies from other people who have used it will be dispelled and will not affect you. This is a great idea for energy-sensitive people who live with people who are grumpy or have bad attitudes. Reiki your bed to give yourself a better night’s sleep. Reiki your clothes and jewelry so they keep you feeling calm and centered all day as you wear them. As you can see the options are limitless since any object can receive Reiki to make it healthier and more gentle and soothing for you to use. Create a better life by having a Reiki Session done on the everyday objects around you today and whenever they need a “tuneup”.

Many of my clients ask how they can best prepare for and receive the most benefits from their Reiki session.

Below is a list of ideas to take into consideration both before and after your next session. Remember, your Reiki session is always catered toward your deepest healing, so finding what works best for you is key.


1. Relax + reflect

Give yourself at least 30 minutes prior to the session to sit and reflect, particularly checking in with how your body is feeling and anything you are noticing with regards to emotions, thoughts or physical sensations. 

Take some time to breathe and also tend to whatever your body's needs might be on that given day. You may also want to reflect on any intentions you want to set for your session, and anything you want to share with your practitioner before you begin. 

2. Eat + hydrate

You’ll want to be sure you've eaten and hydrated a few hours before the session, mostly so you will be as comfortable as possible and not distracted by hunger or thirst.

Avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand, however, as you don’t want all of your body’s energy to be directed toward digesting while you’re receiving your treatment.

3. Get comfy

You will be laying down for the majority of your session, so comfort is key for being open to accepting the Reiki energy.

Be sure you are wearing comfortable clothes. I usually recommend my clients either wear or bring socks since shoes are removed during the session and the feet can get cold.

You’ll also want to use the restroom before the session, and if the position you are in for your session is uncomfortable in any way, communicate this to your practitioner, as she will also want to be sure you are as comfortable as possible.


1. Integrate

I highly suggest that you don't drive immediately after your session until you feel your safely able to do so. I recommend bringing coffee or tea with you for after the session and/or having a friend drive you home.  Many of the treatment benefits can occur as soon as after the session is over and as such, it’s important to find somewhere quiet and relaxing to integrate what may arise. Reiki sessions can help you feel an improved state of being on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. I recommend that my clients take at least 15-20 minutes after the session to meditate, lie down go for a walk in nature or even take a nap. Try not to book or schedule anything immediately after your session. Also some clients either notice an increase of energy while others become very tired.



   After receiving any type of energy healing your body will begin to naturally start to heal and detoxify itself. So it’s important to hydrate, so be sure to drink 1-2 glasses of water immediately after your session. I find adding electrolytes to your water can also be helpful, as it helps to replenish the body. Also be sure to continue drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day in the days that follow your session to assist your body to release any toxins. 

3. Eat

Energy work is often hungry work, and you may find yourself hungry immediately after your session. Be sure you listen to your body and choose a healthy snack or meal afterward if needed. Eating can also help ground the body as you begin to feel more balanced after your session is complete.
